Long weekends 2027 in India: the best days to take leave
Every long weekend and bridge holiday in 2027, and exactly which days to apply for so your leave goes furthest.
2027 is a good year for Monday and Friday holidays, and Holi and Good Friday land in the same week, which makes a 9-day break for only 3 days of leave. The catch: six gazetted holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, including Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra and Christmas, so the second half of the year needs more planning.
Best long weekends in 2027
Holi + Good Friday: Sat 20 – Sun 28 March
Take Mon 22, Wed 24 and Thu 25 March. Holi is Tuesday 23 March and Good Friday is 26 March. The best break of the year. Short on leave? Take just 24 and 25 March for 6 days off (23–28 March).
Ram Navami + Mahavir Jayanti: Thu 15 – Mon 19 April
Take Fri 16 April. Ram Navami is Thursday 15 April and Mahavir Jayanti is Monday 19 April. Add 12–14 April too and you get 10 days off (10–19 April) for 4 leave days.
Bakrid + Buddha Purnima: Sat 15 – Thu 20 May
Take Tue 18 and Wed 19 May. Bakrid (Id-ul-Zuha) is Monday 17 May and Buddha Purnima is Thursday 20 May. Also take Fri 21 May for 9 days off (15–23 May) with 3 leave days.
Republic Day: Sat 23 – Tue 26 January
Republic Day is a Tuesday. Take Mon 25 January.
Buddha Purnima: Thu 20 – Sun 23 May
Take Fri 21 May (or combine it with Bakrid, above).
Id-ul-Fitr, Muharram and Janmashtami (Wednesdays)
Id-ul-Fitr is Wed 10 March, Muharram is Wed 16 June and Janmashtami is Wed 25 August. Take the Thursday and Friday after (or the Monday and Tuesday before) for a 5-day break. Take all four days around them for 9 days off.
Free long weekends
Good Friday (Fri 26 March), Mahavir Jayanti (Mon 19 April), Bakrid (Mon 17 May) and Diwali (Fri 29 October). For a long Diwali break, take 25–28 October for 9 days off (23–31 October).

How to plan your leave for 2027
- Start with the leave that lapses. Casual and sick leave (CL/SL) usually expire at the end of the year, and earned leave (EL) above your carry-forward cap is lost. Spend those days first.
- Bridge Tuesday and Thursday holidays. One day of leave turns them into a 4-day weekend — the best return on a single leave day.
- Use optional holidays (restricted holidays) as free bridges. If your office lets you pick optional holidays, choose ones next to a weekend or a gazetted holiday.
- Apply early for peak weeks. Holi–Good Friday and Diwali are popular; teams often cap how many people can be out at once.
- Plan the second half now. With five holidays on weekends from August to December, a planned break there needs real leave days.
